Shubman Gill ruled out of Kolkata Test due to injury
India captain Shubman Gill has been ruled out of the remainder of the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata after suffering a neck injury. The update came from the Indian cricket board before the start of play on Day 3, Sunday, November 16, 2025.
Gill injured his neck while batting on Day 2 and retired hurt on 4 not out.
Gill was stretchered off the field and taken to the hospital in an ambulance on Saturday evening with his neck immobilised, hours after retiring hurt in India’s first innings. An hour into the morning session of Day 2, he walked in after Washington Sundar’s dismissal and slog-swept Simon Harmer for a four on the third ball he faced. He felt immediate pain and held the back of his neck before the physio attended to him.

“Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the medical team,” the team management said.
India lost their final 7 wickets within 28 overs and were bowled out for 189/9. Gill did not return to bat. Rishabh Pant, who led India in his absence, will continue as stand-in captain for the rest of the match.
Meanwhile, social media discussions have also shifted to chatter around Virat Kohli’s fitness, with many fans noting how rarely Kohli has missed matches due to injury throughout his career.
It is still unclear whether Shubman Gill will recover in time for the second Test starting in 6 days in Guwahati on Nov 22.
