Virat Kohli & Yashasvi Jaiswal after the chase against SA in the third ODI at Vizag

Yashasvi Jaiswal Creates History With First ODI Hundred in Vizag

Yashasvi Jaiswal smashed his maiden ODI hundred in Visakhapatnam, guiding India to a nine-wicket win in the third ODI and sealing the series 2-1 against South Africa. The left-hander walked into the match under pressure after a quiet Test series and two low scores in the first two ODIs. But he responded with a composed and timely innings at the top of the order.

Yashasvi Jaiswal lifts the series trophy for Team India in Vizag.

With Shubman Gill sidelined due to a neck injury, Jaiswal was promoted to open the innings with Rohit Sharma for the series. After two lean outings, he finally found rhythm and intent in the decider, registering his first ODI ton in just his fourth innings with an unbeaten 116 off 121.

India dominated the chase from the start. Rohit Sharma hammered 75 and added 155 for the opening wicket with Jaiswal, becoming only the fourth Indian batter to cross 20,000 international runs. This was India’s 10th century opening stand against South Africa in ODIs and their first since the 2013 Champions Trophy. Jaiswal & Rohit ended this 12-year drought against the Proteas.

Virat Kohli then produced a fluent half-century and picked up the Player of the Series award, sealing India’s comfortable victory.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s innings carried historical weight. With this hundred, he became the sixth Indian batter to score centuries in all three formats, joining Suresh Raina (first), Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill. He achieved the milestone in only his fourth ODI innings, behind only KL Rahul (debut ton) and Manish Pandey (third innings) among Indian men. Kedar Jadhav scored his first in his fourth as well. This also goes on to show that Jaiswal could become a great all-format player for India in the future.

India batters with 100s in all formats:

  • Suresh Raina
  • Rohit Sharma
  • KL Rahul
  • Virat Kohli
  • Shubman Gill
  • Yashasvi Jaiswal*

The century was crucial for the 23-year-old, especially with competition intensifying. Ruturaj Gaikwad struck a hundred in Raipur, Shreyas Iyer will return soon and Abhishek Sharma continues to push for opportunities at the top with his fine form in T20Is. Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to make way when full-time captain Shubman Gill returns to the side. But this innings keeps him firmly in the selectors’ plans for the long term.

With two full seasons before the 2027 ODI World Cup, India now have a strong pool of top-order options and Jaiswal has ensured his name remains very much in that conversation.

The South Africa series now moves to the shortest format, its final stop. Gambhir has confirmed Shubman Gill’s return at the press conference after the ODI series, while Hardik Pandya will also return to the T20I side.

Here’s the T20I series schedule:
