European footballers Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suarez in India for the GOAT Tour

Top European Footballers Who Have Played in India

European footballers are widely regarded as the best in the world. They play in the biggest football leagues and are known to set global standards for the game. Over the years, India has also seen several iconic European footballers, either through exhibition visits or official league appearances.

Most recently, Lionel Messi visited India along with Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul. The trio arrived as part of the GOAT tour. They did not play an official match in the country. Still, Messi’s visit across cities like Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi highlighted India’s growing place on the global map.

This was not Messi’s first visit to India. Back in 2011, Messi and Sergio Aguero travelled to India with the Argentina national team. Argentina played an international friendly against Venezuela at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata. Messi featured in that match, making it one of the most high-profile football games ever played in India.

While many visits have been promotional, several European footballers have officially played competitive football in India, especially during the Indian Super League (ISL) era and even before it.

European Footballers Who Played in India

Alessandro Del Piero (Italy)
The Juventus legend signed for Delhi Dynamos FC during ISL’s inaugural season in 2014. Del Piero’s arrival was one of the biggest moments in Indian football. He played the full season and also captained the ISL side.

Marco Materazzi and Alessandro Nesta (Italy)
Both World Cup winners (with Italy) joined Chennaiyin FC. Materazzi later became the club’s head coach. Their presence added tactical depth and once brought global credibility to the ISL.

David James (England)
The former England goalkeeper joined Kerala Blasters FC. He served as both player and manager. James brought Premier League experience to the ISL and played a key role in the league’s visibility during its early days.

Robert Pires (France)
The former Arsenal star played for FC Goa. Pires featured during the league’s formative years and helped raise the technical standard of the competition.

Dimitar Berbatov (Bulgaria)
The former Manchester United striker joined Kerala Blasters as a marquee signing. Known for his elegant style and control, Berbatov attracted massive interest from both the teams’ massive fan bases.

Robbie Keane (Ireland)
The prolific striker played for ATK (Atletico de Kolkata). Keane’s goals helped ATK win the ISL title, making him one of the most successful European imports.

Luis Garcia (Spain)
The former Liverpool midfielder also played for ATK. His experience added balance to the midfield during the early ISL seasons.

Nicolas Anelka (France)
Anelka joined Mumbai City FC as a marquee player. The former Arsenal, Chelsea and Real Madrid forward was among the biggest names to feature in the ISL.

Diego Forlan (Uruguay)
Though South American, Forlan built his legacy in European football with Manchester United and Atletico Madrid. He shared the pitch with Sunil Chhetri at Mumbai City FC.

Several other European stars have also played in India, including Freddie Ljungberg, Tim Cahill, Joan Capdevila and David Trezeguet. Their involvement helped the ISL gain early traction.

European Footballers Playing in India Through AFC Competitions

In recent years, elite clubs from the Saudi Pro League have visited India for AFC competitions. During the AFC Champions League 2025-26 match in Goa in October 2025, stars such as Sadio Mane, Joao Felix, Inigo Martinez, Kingsley Coman and Marcelo Brozovic travelled to India. Mane and Felix featured in the match between FC Goa and Al Nassr.

Earlier, in November 2023, Mumbai City FC hosted Al Hilal in Mumbai. Players like Kalidou Koulibaly, Ruben Neves and Aleksandar Mitrovic played in India during that fixture. Neymar Jr missed this match due to injury.

Legends Who Have Visited India

Apart from official matches, India has also welcomed some of football’s greatest players. Pele, Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Oliver Kahn and Thomas Muller have all visited India for promotional events, youth programs and international friendlies.

These visits, along with the Indian Super League and continental matches, show how European footballers have shaped India’s football journey so far. Their presence continues to inspire players and fans across the country but the ISL isn’t the same as it used to be.
