Rajasthan Royals Captaincy Drama Ahead of IPL 2026 in Full
Rajasthan Royals have made a surprising leadership call ahead of IPL 2026.
India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was widely expected to take over as captain. Strong reports earlier suggested that Jadeja left Chennai Super Kings in a major trade because Rajasthan Royals were ready to hand him the leadership role. Jadeja was previously part of the team during 2008 and 2009.
However, the franchise has now decided otherwise. Instead, Riyan Parag will lead Rajasthan Royals as full-time captain in IPL 2026.
Reports indicate that new head coach Kumar Sangakkara finalised Riyan Parag for the role. Sangakkara reportedly interviewed multiple players before making the decision. Parag impressed the team management with his vision and leadership ideas.
Ravindra Jadeja, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Riyan Parag were all in contention. But the Royals opted for a younger, long-term choice. Jaiswal was left behind due to lack of captaincy experience but it is worth noting that he has been the team’s most consistent player ever since his RR debut.
Sanju Samson’s exit also influenced the decision. After 11 seasons with Rajasthan Royals, Samson moved to Chennai Super Kings in a record trade deal. That deal brought Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to Rajasthan.
Now, Rajasthan Royals are building a new leadership core.
Riyan Parag’s Experience with Rajasthan Royals
Riyan Parag is not new to captaincy. He has led Assam in domestic cricket. He also captained Rajasthan Royals during IPL 2025 when Sanju Samson missed 8 matches due to injury. That spell was challenging. Rajasthan Royals managed only 2 wins during that period.
Still, the franchise sees Parag as a long-term investment.
Parag has been part of Rajasthan Royals since his IPL debut in 2019. He has completed 7 straight seasons with the franchise. Over the last two years, he has played every single match for the team.
Riyan Parag’s Breakthrough Season for RR
The 2024 IPL season changed Parag’s career. He scored 573 runs at an impressive average of 52.09 and a strike rate close to 150. That performance earned him a Team India call-up.
Overall, Parag has played 84 matches for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL. He has scored 1,566 runs and picked up 7 wickets.
The franchise now sees him as the face of a new era.
