Rohit Sharma wishes to win another ICC trophy for India
Rohit Sharma has made his intentions clear. The India captain wants to play in the 2027 ODI World Cup. More importantly, he wants to win it.
Speculation had surrounded Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli after both retired from T20Is and Tests. Many wondered if they would continue until the next 50-over World Cup. Questions were raised about form, fitness and limited game time.
On February 11, Rohit Sharma ended the debate. He confirmed he plans to play the 2027 ODI World Cup. He also said he is determined to lift the trophy.
After returning to international cricket in October following a 7-month break, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli dominated the ODI format.
Across three series against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand:
- Virat Kohli scored 616 runs in 9 innings at an average of 88, including 3 centuries and 3 fifties.
- Rohit Sharma scored 409 runs in 9 innings at an average of 51.12, with 3 fifties and 1 century.

Both players also featured in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. They scored centuries in their opening matches to underline their commitment towards the format and upcoming goals for India.
Rohit Sharma Confirms 2027 ODI World Cup Ambition
At an ICC event, Rohit Sharma admitted he is not satisfied with just participating in 2027. He wants to win the ODI World Cup, especially after India’s heartbreaking loss to Australia in the 2023 final in Ahmedabad. India had remained unbeaten until that final.
Rohit said:
“I definitely want to go out there and win the World Cup for my country; that is something that I’ve always looked upon. I’ve grown up watching this 50-over World Cup. There was no T20 World Cup, no IPL back then and that was the pinnacle of cricket, which used to happen every four years. So, there was desperation; there was so much weight for that one trophy. And yeah, I really want that trophy, so I’m going to try and do everything in my power and capacity to work hard and get it.”
Rohit Sharma’s World Cup Record So Far
Rohit Sharma has already won the T20 World Cup twice:
- 2007 – As a player
- 2024 – As captain
He is the only Indian player and one of the nine cricketers to have won the T20 World Cup twice.

However, he is yet to win the ODI World Cup.
Virat Kohli won the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the T20 World Cup in 2024.
Rohit and Kohli will next return to international action during India’s tour of England in July. Before that, they will feature in IPL 2026.
