Zimbabwe players in a team huddle before the 2026 T20 World cup match against Sri Lanka

Zimbabwe Cricket: The Surprise Package of T20 World Cup 2026

Two years ago, Zimbabwe failed to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the United States and West Indies and Uganda took their spot.

But that setback was not the lowest point in Zimbabwe cricket’s journey.

Back in 2019, Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) was in deep trouble. The ICC suspended the board in July 2019 due to constant government interference. Zimbabwe were barred from participating in qualifying tournaments for the next T20 World Cup. They eventually missed the 2021 edition.

ZC’s funds were frozen. The board was dealing with a debt of around $27 million. The suspension lasted 4 months. Soon after reinstatement, the Covid-19 pandemic hit. Tours were cancelled. Revenue streams for the board dried up.

Under chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani, Zimbabwe Cricket began rebuilding. It took 3 more years for them to become debt-free. By 2023, the recovery had truly started.

Zimbabwe Cricket’s Key Decisions Changed the Story

Zimbabwe Cricket restructured domestic cricket. They moved back to 5 franchises instead of 4 to expand the talent pool and scout more players coming through.

In 2024, they appointed Justin Sammons as head coach.

Captain Sikandar Raza also played a major role silently. He visited domestic franchises and shared the long-term roadmap with players.

The 2025 home tri-series featuring New Zealand and South Africa proved to be a turning point for Zimbabwe Cricket. Full member nations touring the country was a big win after what they had gone through.

The foundation for Zimbabwe’s T20 World Cup in 2026 success was laid during that period.

Zimbabwe Top Group B in T20 World Cup 2026

Zimbabwe have shocked the cricket world in 2026.

They topped Group B. They defeated Australia, Sri Lanka and Oman. Their match against Ireland was abandoned.

They faced a major early setback when their most experienced player Brendan Taylor was replaced by Ben Curran after the first match.

Zimbabwe still finished the group unbeaten in completed matches.

Now, they move into the Super 8 stage. They will first face the West Indies, then India and then South Africa.

Two years after failing to qualify, Zimbabwe have become one of the standout teams of the tournament.

Top Performers at T20 World Cup 2026

Brian Bennett has been outstanding. He has scored 175 runs in 3 matches and is yet to be dismissed in the tournament. He has stayed unbeaten in all the 3 matches so far. Tadiwanashe Marumani is the next best with 90 runs but the team needs more batters stepping up.

Captain Sikandar Raza has led from the front, both tactically and inspirationally. His 45 off 26 balls against Sri Lanka at the Premadasa Stadium proved decisive. Zimbabwe completed one of the highest successful chases at that venue.

With the ball, Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans have delivered consistently. Muzarabani has taken 9 wickets. Evans has claimed 8 wickets.

Zimbabwe’s spin attack has shown discipline. Their fielding has been sharp. The team has shed the “minnows” tag.

Zimbabwe Now Face Bigger Challenge in Super 8

Zimbabwe now head to India for the Super 8 stage.

The spotlight will grow stronger. The opposition will get tougher. India, especially, are formidable in the shortest format.

But whatever happens next, Zimbabwe have already written one of the best comeback stories of this T20 World Cup.

If they reach the semifinals, it will truly be a fairytale campaign.
