T20 World Cup 2026: India’s Semifinal Results at the Wankhede
The iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai will host the big match when India take on England in the second semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026 on Thursday, March 5.
Situated in the financial capital of the country, Wankhede has witnessed several memorable knockout matches in the past. Team India have won some and also been on the losing side in a few of them.
It was also the same venue where India began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against the United States of America with a comfortable win. Wankhede is also remembered for India’s 2011 ODI World Cup final win against Sri Lanka.
Ahead of India’s 2026 T20 World Cup semifinal against England, here’s a look at the last three semifinal matches India have played at the Wankhede Stadium.
1987 ODI World Cup Semifinal – India vs England
India entered the semifinal as defending champions after their historic 1983 triumph.
The Kapil Dev-led side topped the group stage after winning 5 out of 6 matches.
England batted first and crossed the 250-run mark. Graham Gooch scored a brilliant century, while captain Mike Gatting added a quick fifty that shifted the momentum in the middle overs.
India suffered an early setback during the chase. Leading run-scorer and Indian icon Sunil Gavaskar was dismissed in single digits for just 4 runs. Team India managed a few partnerships but none big enough to take control of the match. After 40 overs, India were still in the contest at 204/5.
However, the innings collapsed dramatically. India lost their final 5 wickets for just 15 runs in 5.3 overs and lost the semifinal by 35 runs.
Back then, it was only the third ODI India had played at Wankhede and it also became their first-ever loss at the venue. Australia eventually won the title.
2016 T20 World Cup Semifinal – India vs West Indies
India reached the semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2016 after a thrilling win over Australia in the group stage.
They faced a strong West Indies side that had suffered only one shock defeat during the tournament, against Afghanistan.
West Indies’ then captain Darren Sammy won the toss and asked India to bat. India got a steady start through the Mumbai opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane. After 16 overs, India were placed at 128/2.
Virat Kohli then accelerated the innings with powerful hitting and sharp running between the wickets. He scored 89* off 47 and his late flourish helped India finish at 192/2 at the end of 20 overs.
Despite the strong total, India struggled with missed chances and the dew factor during the chase. Both Hardik Pandya and Ravichandran Ashwin overstepped at key moments while Ravindra Jadeja was also expensive along with Pandya.
Jasprit Bumrah had dismissed Chris Gayle early but Lendl Simmons controlled the chase with 82* off 51. Andre Russell then produced a match-winning cameo of 43* off 20 balls as West Indies chased down 192 with 2 balls to spare.

The West Indies went on to lift the title and became the first team to win it twice.
2023 ODI World Cup Semifinal – India vs New Zealand
The most recent semifinal for Team India at Wankhede came during the 2023 ODI World Cup. India entered the match as favourites after an unbeaten league stage.
Rohit Sharma set the tone with a quick 47 off 29 balls against the New Zealand new-ball attack. Shubman Gill battled cramps to score 80 off 66 balls.
Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer then took charge with centuries. Kohli’s innings was historic as he scored his 50th ODI century, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 hundreds. KL Rahul also played a quick cameo as India finished just short of the 400-run mark.
New Zealand fought hard in the chase. Daryl Mitchell scored a century to keep them in the match.
However, Mohammad Shami delivered a historic performance. He picked up 7 wickets as New Zealand were bowled out for 327.

Shami wasn’t picked for the 2026 T20 World Cup despite being fit and performing in domestic cricket.
India secured a memorable victory and reached the final but went on to suffer a defeat against Australia in the final.
