Simon Harmer celebrating against India during the first test in Kolkata

Who is Simon Harmer? Kolkata Test’s Player of the Match

Simon Harmer has lived one of the most unusual journeys in modern Test cricket. The South African off-spinner entered the Kolkata Test as a veteran of the first-class circuit and he walked out as the Player of the Match with 8 wickets and a performance that stunned India on their home turf. 10 years after India exposed his flaws, life came full-circle for Simon Harmer. He used the lessons to finally get past the Indian batting lineup during the first Test match in Kolkata.

Harmer began his career with Eastern Province in the 2009-10 season. He soon moved to Warriors and topped the first-class bowling charts two years later with 44 wickets at 31.75. Despite this, he struggled to break past Paul Harris in the South African national setup. He stayed consistent in A-team cricket and improved his lower order batting with a first-class hundred and several fifties.

Simon Harmer came into contention for the Proteas when their attitude towards spin was changing in the mid-2010s. But he was never the preferred option, a second to Dane Piedt.

His Test debut came in the New Year’s Test of 2015 against the Windies when Piedt was injured, where he took 7 wickets. He was on the Bangladesh tour later that year. After that. he picked up 5 wickets each in two Tests in India. His last match of that series came in Nagpur, where he took 5 wickets in the match, including 4 in the first innings. The South African team management wanted more on a turning surface and he lost his place to Dane Piedt.

Instead of fading away, Harmer rebuilt himself. In 2016, he trained in Mumbai with coach Umesh Patwal to understand the finer mechanics of spin in the subcontinent like release, drift, overspin, angle and pace. Even then, he found it tough to return to the national side. In 2017, he signed a Kolpak deal with Essex and immediately delivered. He took 72 wickets at under 20 each, powering Essex to their first Championship title in 25 years.

Over 9 seasons, Simon Harmer never finished outside the County Championship’s top ten wicket-takers. He topped the charts in 2019, 2020 and 2022. He also delivered on Finals Day of the T20 Blast, taking 7 wickets before hitting the winning runs. As the Kolpak system ended after Brexit, he became eligible for South Africa again. It would be fair to say that his county stints have shaped him into the bowler he is today.

South Africa recalled him in 2022 for the home series against Bangladesh, where he and Keshav Maharaj took 29 of the 40 wickets in just two Tests. They bowled unchanged twice. But he found his most complete version as spin bowler in 2025. He knows his role clearly now: whenever South Africa need a second spinner behind Maharaj, he must deliver with any excuse.

With more than 1,000 first-class wickets, Harmer brought immense experience into Kolkata, something the Indian lineup wasn’t expecting. That showed in the way he controlled his lengths. He pitched 94% of his deliveries between good length and full, forcing India into mistakes after Shubman Gill left the field. India resisted till Rishabh Pant stayed in the middle, but Harmer kept building pressure. He finished with 8 wickets across both innings and also won the Player of the Match award.

He arrived into this series fresh from a dominant run in Pakistan, where he picked 13 wickets in 4 innings in subcontinent conditions. But dominating the Indian batters in Kolkata might have added a reviving chapter to his story for South Africa.
