Virat Kohli is used to enjoying successful years in cricket. The India legend enjoyed one of the most memorable years of his career in 2025. He finished the year as India’s leading ODI run-scorer and broke several long-standing international records. 

Kohli retired from T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024. On 12th May this year, he stepped away from his most loved format, Test cricket. The news came as a shock but his red-ball cricket retirement followed that of Rohit Sharma, with Kohli choosing to retire on his own terms. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement after the board decided to pass on the Test captaincy to Shubman Gill.

One-day cricket remains the only international format Kohli is active in. He finished the year with a successful outing against South Africa and then returned to List-A cricket after 15 years where he scored a century in the very first match. He crossed 16,000 List-A runs, becoming only the second Indian batter after Sachin Tendulkar.

But above all the stats & numbers, Virat Kohli’s numbers reflected dominance, while his milestones underlined longevity at the highest level. From ICC events to bilateral series to domestic cricket, Kohli left his mark everywhere.

Virat Kohli: Batting Records in 2025

Virat Kohli became the fastest player to reach 14,000 ODI runs, reinforcing his status as one of the greatest ODI batters of all time.

He also became the fastest cricketer to score 82, 83 and 84 international centuries, extending his lead at the top. He is only behind Sachin Tendulkar (100 international centuries) in the all-time list.

In ODIs, Kohli set new benchmarks by becoming the first player to score 51, 52 and 53 ODI centuries. In 2023, he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries and now leads the list.

This record makes him the player with the most international centuries in a single format, further separating himself from the rest. Previously, Sachin Tendulkar held the record with 51 Test centuries.

Kohli became the first player to score 10,000 runs in ODI bilateral series, a testament to his consistency outside ICC tournaments.

Another major milestone came when he became only the second Indian to score ODI hundreds in 10 different countries.

Virat Kohli: ICC Tournament Records

During the 2025 Champions Trophy, Virat Kohli became the first player to score 1,000 runs in ICC knockout matches.

He also became India’s leading run-scorer in the Champions Trophy, finishing with 747 runs.

Champions Trophy 2025 final marked his 9th ICC final, the joint-most by any player. He won the trophy which takes his tally to 3 ICC ODI trophies, most for India.

Overall, he finished with 4 ICC trophies, making him joint-highest among Indian cricketers.

At 36 years and 110 days, Kohli also became the oldest player to score a century in the Champions Trophy.

Virat Kohli: India and ODI-Specific Milestones

Virat Kohli finished 2025 as India’s highest ODI run-scorer, amassing 651 runs.

He became the first Indian to score 18,000 international runs in wins, underlining his match-winning impact for the Indian team.

Kohli also became the only player to average over 60 in ODIs across 6 different calendar years.

He finished inside the top two of the ICC ODI rankings for the 10th time, another unmatched achievement.

Additionally, Kohli ended the year inside the ICC ODI top 10 rankings for the 16th time, the joint-most ever.

Kohli’s Fielding and Match Awards Records

Virat Kohli has 167 catches, the most by an Indian fielder in ODI cricket.

Across all formats, he now has the most catches by an Indian in international cricket, with 342 dismissals.

He also holds the record for the most Man of the Match awards at home in international cricket, with 32 awards.

Kohli further became the first player to win a Man of the Match award against Pakistan in all ICC tournaments.

Kohli’s Unique Multi-Team Records

Virat Kohli became the only player to score 10 or more centuries against 4 different international teams – Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies and South Africa.

This record once again highlighted his dominance against full-member oppositions.
