Canada's Yuvraj Samra celebrating his century against New Zealand at the 2026 T20 World Cup

Who is Yuvraj Samra? T20 World Cup’s Youngest Centurion

The T20 World Cup 2026 has already produced a breakout star. And, his name is Yuvraj Samra.

Canada’s 19-year-old left-hander stunned New Zealand with a magnificent century on February 17 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. In a high-pressure clash, Samra announced himself on the world stage.

Samra was born to Indian parents in Brampton, who moved from Punjab to Ontario in Canada.

Opening the batting, he carried Canada’s innings and scored 110 off just 65 balls. His knock included 11 fours and 6 sixes at a strike rate of 169.23. Canada posted 173/4 in 20 overs, a competitive total against one of the tournament favourites.

But this was not just another hundred. It was history.

The Youngest T20 World Cup Centurion

At 19 years and 141 days, Yuvraj Samra became the youngest batter to score a century in T20 World Cup history.

The previous record belonged to Ahmed Shehzad, who scored a hundred in the 2014 edition at 22 years and 127 days.

Samra also moved past several big names on the list:

  • Suresh Raina – 23 years and 156 days (2010)
  • Alex Hales – 25 years and 83 days (2014)
  • Glenn Phillips – 25 years and 327 days (2022)

For a teenager to break this record in just his first World Cup appearance makes it even more special. He now also holds the highest individual score at the T20 World Cup by a player from an Associate Nation.

Yuvraj Samra in International Cricket

What makes the story even more remarkable is how new he is to international cricket. Samra made his debut for Canada in March 2025.

So far, he has played 8 ODIs and 19 T20Is. He has also featured in Global T20 Canada and the Super 60 tournament.

The Chennai hundred was his maiden T20I century. And it came against New Zealand on the biggest stage.

The Fastest Fifty for Canada

Samra is not new to explosive knocks. He holds the record for the fastest fifty by a Canada batter in T20 Internationals. In a T20 World Cup qualifying match against the Bahamas in 2025, he smashed an unbeaten 15-ball half-century.

That knock included 3 boundaries and 5 sixes at a strike rate of 333.33.

He narrowly missed another famous record. Yuvraj Singh still holds the fastest T20 World Cup fifty with his 12-ball effort in 2007.

Samra’s Indian Connection

Born in Brampton, Canada, Yuvraj Samra has Indian roots. His father, Baljit Singh Samra, moved from Punjab to Canada.

Baljit is a big fan of Punjab and India legend Yuvraj Singh. Inspired by the Indian legend’s batting and achievements, he named his son after India’s World Cup hero.

Interestingly, Samra has also met Yuvraj Singh twice.

The first meeting came during Global T20 Canada in 2019 when Yuvraj Singh played for Toronto Nationals. The second came during the Canada Super 60 tournament, an event initiated by Yuvraj Singh that featured Suresh Raina, Piyush Chawla and Shikhar Dhawan.

For a young cricketer named after his idol, those meetings carry special meaning.

Full Journey of Yuvraj Samra

Samra’s journey has been disciplined and focused. He was homeschooled in his 11th and 12th grades to concentrate on cricket. At 13, he began training under Amarinder Bhinder, a Cricket South Africa Level 3 coach who was based in Toronto at the time.

Bhinder introduced him to the Patiala Shahi Cricket Club. The club played a crucial role in his early development and gave him exposure through tournaments across Canada.

He also played in the Toronto District Cricket Association (TDCA) and the Brampton and Etobicoke District Cricket League (BEDCL) before making his List-A and international debut.

The structured pathway paid off when he made his T20 World Cup debut against South Africa at the 2026 Two World Cup.

Yuvraj Samra has already stated his ambition clearly. He aims to play in the IPL, CPL and other major T20 leagues around the globe.

Given his aggressive style and ability to clear the ropes, it’s possible that franchises are already watching him and other young stars closely.

At just 19 years old, he has already broken a T20 World Cup record. If his start is any indication, this may only be the beginning.

The T20 World Cup often creates new stars. This time, it may have found one in Canada.
