Team India lifting the 2026 T20 World Cup trophy after winning the final against New Zealand in Ahmedabad

India Break Multiple Records in T20 World Cup Final Victory

India created history after defeating New Zealand in the 2026 T20 World Cup Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The victory made India become the first team to win the T20 World Cup three times.

India previously won the tournament in 2007 and 2024. Other teams with multiple titles are West Indies (2012 & 2016) and England (2010 & 2022). Pakistan (2009), Sri Lanka (2014) and Australia (2021) have won the tournament once each.

India have now reached the T20 World Cup Final four times, the most by any team in the tournament’s history.

During the 2026 campaign, India went unbeaten in the group stage and suffered only one loss in the Super Eights, which came against South Africa. They secured their place in the final after defeating England in a dramatic and high-scoring semifinal.

New Zealand reached their second T20 World Cup Final, having previously lost the 2021 final to Australia.

Only one team has scored more in the final of a T20 tournament. Jharkhand made 262/3 against Haryana in Pune in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025/26.

India’s 96-run victory is the fourth-highest winning margin in a T20I final and the largest ever by a Full Member team.

India Equal Highest Powerplay Score

India scored 92/0 against New Zealand in the final, which equals the highest Powerplay total in T20 World Cup history. West Indies also scored 92/1 against Afghanistan in Gros Islet in 2024.

The previous highest Powerplay score in a knockout match was 84/0 by New Zealand against South Africa at Eden Gardens in the semifinal of this edition.

This total is also the third-highest Powerplay score for India in all T20 Internationals.

Abhishek Sharma Sets New Fifty Record

Abhishek Sharma reached his fifty in 18 balls, the fastest half-century in T20 World Cup knockouts.

He broke the previous record of 19 balls, achieved by Finn Allen and Jacob Bethell in the semifinals of this edition.

This was also the fourth time Abhishek reached a fifty in under 20 balls in T20Is. That is the most by any batter, surpassing 3 each from Finn Allen, David Warner, Phil Salt, Colin Munro and his mentor Yuvraj Singh.

Samson Joins Elite List in T20 World Cup

Sanju Samson became the seventh batter to score 50+ in 3 or more successive innings in T20 World Cups.

He also became the third Indian to achieve the feat after:

  • Virat Kohli (2016–21)
  • KL Rahul (2021)

Samson also broke Kohli’s record for the most runs by an Indian batter in a T20 WC edition. Kohli had scored 319 runs in the 2014 edition. Samson scored 321 runs in just 5 matches at an average of 80.25 and a strike rate of 199.37.

Samson Sets New Six-Hitting Record

Sanju Samson smashed 24 sixes in the tournament. That is the most by a batter in a single T20 World Cup edition.

Before this, the record across the first 9 editions belonged to Nicholas Pooran, who hit 17 sixes in 2024.

The list now has more additions from the 2026 edition itself:

India’s Top Three All Score Fifties

India achieved another unique record in the T20 World Cup Final.

  • Sanju Samson – 89
  • Abhishek Sharma – 52
  • Ishan Kishan – 54

This is the first time the top three batters have all scored 50+ in a T20 World Cup innings.

Overall, it is only the fifth instance of 3 half-centuries in a single innings and the first time it has happened in a knockout match.

India Smash 100+ Sixes in This T20 World Cup

India also became the first team to hit more than 100 sixes in a T20 competition.

They smashed 106 sixes across 9 matches in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Jasprit Bumrah Breaks Wicket Record

With 14 wickets in this edition, Jasprit Bumrah now has 40 wickets in the tournament, the most by a fast bowler in T20 World Cups. He surpassed Lasith Malinga’s previous record of 38 wickets.

Bumrah also delivered 4/15 in the final, which is the second-best bowling figures in a T20 World Cup Final.

The best remains Ajantha Mendis’ 4/12 against West Indies in Colombo (RPS) in 2012.
