Team-Wise Opening Pairs in IPL 2026, with Full Analysis
A strong start often defines the innings in T20 cricket. Over the last few seasons, all teams focus heavily on maximising the powerplay. So for every team, their opening pairs will be crucial in IPL 2026. As a result, franchises have either retained proven combinations or invested in aggressive new partnerships.
Teams like SunRisers Hyderabad, Punjab Kings, Royals Challengers Bengaluru, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans already have fixed opening duos due to successful opening partnerships in recent seasons. Mumbai Indians and Rajasthan Royals have also fixated on their opening duos. MI are relying on experience while RR on youth.
Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders are currently spoilt for choices. But, their opening combination will also come down to factors like overseas combinations and impact player options. Players like Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma, Sai Sudharsan, Krunal Pandya and Romario Shepherd were frequently used as impact players last season.
Here is a detailed look at all team-wise opening pairs for IPL 2026, along with their stats and role clarity.
SRH’s Aggressive Opening Duo
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head have become one of the most feared opening pairs in modern T20 cricket. Famously called ‘Travishek’, both are naturally aggressive, compliment each other very well and attack from ball one. Their left-handed combination puts bowlers under constant pressure and disrupts line and length. In the last 2 seasons, they have scored 1202 runs together at an average of 46.23. They have 4 century and 5 half-century partnerships.
Together, they have broken multiple powerplay, six-hitting and team total records over the last two seasons. Abhishek has scored 1816 runs at an average of 27.10 and a strike rate of 163.01. Head has scored 1146 runs in 38 matches at an average of 34.72 and a strike rate of 170.02. The team has Ishan Kishan at number three, another fearless player who can even open the innings if needed.
RR’s Exciting Openers
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi
Yashasvi Jaiswal has already established himself as one of the most reliable young openers in the world. He has scored 2166 runs in 67 matches at an average of 34.38 and a strike rate of 152.85.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi is a rising talent. In just 7 IPL matches, he has scored 206 runs at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 206.55, which is exceptional for a new player. He made his debut last season when Sanju Samson was injured and made an instant impact even scoring a century.

Last year, Jaiswal and Suryavanshi scored 422 runs together at an average of 60.28 which included a century and 3 half-century partnerships.
If this pair clicks again, Rajasthan Royals can dominate the powerplay phase. This also looks like a long-term investment for the franchise and RR are clearly building around youth at the top, which gives them flexibility for multiple seasons without frequent changes.
CSK’s New Opening Pair
Sanju Samson and Ayush Mhatre
CSK are likely to go with a fresh opening pair. Ayush Mhatre has scored 240 runs in 7 matches at a strike rate of 188.97 including a 94-run knock, showing strong attacking intent.
Sanju Samson has been added to the squad and brings immense T20 experience. He has scored 4704 runs in 177 matches at an average of 30.94 and a strike rate of 139.04. He recently had a successful T20 World Cup campaign for India and comes in with form.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has opened regularly for CSK, is expected to move to number three to make way for Samson at the top, which is his natural position. This move gives CSK a more aggressive start compared to their traditionally stable approach in previous seasons.
LSG’s Successful Opening Duo
Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh
Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh provide a balanced opening combination. Markram has scored 1440 runs in 57 matches at an average of 31.30 and a strike rate of 135.08. Last season, he scored 445 runs at 148.83 SR. The duo scored 574 runs together last season including 4 half-century and a century stand, which was the second highest behind GT openers.
Mitchell Marsh has scored 1292 IPL runs in 55 matches at an average of 27.48 and a strike rate of 142.92. He finished as the fifth-highest run-scorer last season with 627 runs at a strike rate of 163.71. Nicholas Pooran also scored 500+ runs at 196.25 SR last season, adding depth to the batting unit and can also open, if need be. LSG’s strength lies in having multiple power-hitters, which reduces pressure on the opening pair to take all the risks early.
PBKS’ Strong Opening Pair
Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya
Punjab Kings found success with this young opening pair in IPL 2025. The duo scored 532 runs together and their aggressive starts took PBKS to their second final in IPL history.
Priyansh Arya scored 475 runs at an average of 27.94 and a strike rate of 179.24. Prabhsimran Singh has scored 1305 runs overall at an average of 25.58 and a strike rate of 151.92. Last season, he scored 549 runs in 17 matches.
PBKS finally looked settled at the top after multiple seasons of frequent changes in opening combinations. Their left-right combination of Priyansh & Prabhsimran proved effective and looks set to continue for the next few seasons to come.
MI’s Experienced Opening Duo
Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock
Mumbai Indians have gone back to a proven combination. Quinton de Kock returned for INR 2 crore in the IPL 2026 mini-auction. He had an underwhelming season with KKR last year and made a late entry to the auction list.

He has scored 3309 runs in 115 matches at an average of 30.63 and a strike rate of 134.02. He has also recorded multiple 500-run seasons with MI. MI’s decision to bring de Kock back reflects a clear intent to return to a stable and experienced opening setup. MI also have Ryan Rickelton in the side who opened with Rohit last year scoring 439 runs together, not the best but they got the job done on few occasions.
Rohit Sharma has scored 7046 runs in 257 matches at an average of 29.73 and a strike rate of 132.09, leading MI to 5 titles between 2013 and 2020. The duo previously opened together during 2019-2021, winning titles in 2019 and 2021.
GT’s Lethal Opening Pair
Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan
Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan are among the most consistent opening pairs in IPL. Last season, Gill and Sudharsan amassed 912 runs for the opening wicket with 3 century and 4 half-century stands. This pair’s success has pushed Jos Buttler to bat at number three, even after him being a natural opener throughout this career.
Gill has scored 3866 runs in 118 matches at an average of 39.44 and a strike rate of 138.71. Sudharsan has scored 1793 runs in 40 matches at an average of 49.80 and a strike rate of 145.89. Last season, he won the Orange Cap with 759 runs in 15 innings, while Gill scored 650 runs. Sudharsan’s performances also earned him a Test debut for India.
Jos Buttler adds depth and scored 538 runs at 163.03 SR last year in the IPL, batting at number three. GT arguably has one of the most consistent opening pairs in terms of averages across multiple seasons.
RCB’s Reliable Openers
Virat Kohli and Phil Salt
Virat Kohli and Phil Salt were key to RCB’s IPL 2025 title win. Kohli is the leading run-scorer in IPL history with 8661 runs in 267 matches at an average of 39.54 and a strike rate of 132.85, including 8 centuries and 63 fifties. Last season, he scored 657 runs in 15 innings leading the team’s batting from the front.

Phil Salt has scored 1056 runs at an average of 34.06 and a strike rate of 175.70. He is also England’s regular T20I opener and is a natural aggressor while Kohli brings stability to the team’s opening. This pair works due to role clarity, Salt attacks in the powerplay while Kohli anchors and accelerates later.
DC’s Hunt For New Pair
KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka (Expected)
Delhi Capitals struggled last season, using 7 different opening combinations.
KL Rahul is expected to open regularly due to his strong IPL record at the top. He was the only player who looked settled even last year. However, his partner is yet to be finalised due to multiple players contending for the spot. Sri Lanka’s Pathum Nissanka is one of the most consistent openers in international cricket and is expected to partner Rahul. DC also picked Prithvi Shaw during the auction and he could be in the running. Shaw has opened for DC in the past.

Abishek Porel is another player for the spot. He has scored 661 runs in 31 matches at an average of 25.42 and a strike rate of 149.88. Ben Duckett, yet to debut in IPL, has a T20I strike rate of 153.19. DC’s success may depend heavily on finally finding a stable opening combination after last season’s instability.
KKR’s Opening Duo
Ajinkya Rahane and Tim Seifert / Finn Allen
KKR are yet to confirm their opening pair. Ajinkya Rahane is likely to open. Similar to DC, KKR also have a number of players who are competing for the opening slot. They could also use Tim Seifert or Finn Allen after their strong T20 World Cup performances.
Sunil Narine remains another option. KKR have used Narine as an opener in the past, but it did not work consistently last season. Narine has scored 1780 runs in 189 matches at a strike rate of 166.51, including one century.
KKR have used Narine as an opener a number of IPL seasons in the past, but it did not work consistently last season. KKR have multiple options but lack a fixed combination, which could affect their early-season consistency.
