India recently won the 2026 T20 World Cup without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as the duo retired from T20Is after winning the 2024 title. However, questions remained over their impact in the shortest format. The opening matches of IPL 2026 gave a clear answer.
RCB faced SRH in the first game in Bengaluru, while MI took on KKR in the second in Mumbai. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane all made strong statements with the bat along with a few youngsters also contributing substantially.
Kohli Anchors RCB’s Chase in IPL 2026 Opener
Virat Kohli played a match-winning knock for RCB. He scored 69* off 38 balls while chasing 202 in Bengaluru.
Kohli hit 5 fours and 5 sixes. He maintained a strike rate of over 180. RCB completed the chase in under 16 overs, showing complete batting control throughout the game.
Hitman Leads MI’s Fight in IPL 2026
Rohit Sharma impressed in MI’s chase against KKR. He scored 78 off 38 balls in a high-scoring game.
His innings included 6 fours and 6 sixes. He batted at a strike rate of 205.26. Rohit kept MI in the contest while chasing 221 runs.
Last season, he majorly played as an impact sub but this time he will be opening regularly.
Captain Rahane Plays Solid Knock
KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane also looked in good touch. He scored 67 off 40 balls while opening with Finn Allen.
Rahane struck 3 fours and 5 sixes. His strike rate was 167.50, providing stability and momentum at the top.
Shardul Delivers With the Ball
Shardul Thakur made a solid impact with the ball for MI. He picked up 3/39 in 4 overs against his former side.

He dismissed KKR’s top three batters – Ajinkya Rahane, Finn Allen and Cameron Green. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Youngsters Steal the Show
Just two games into the season, a number of youngsters have also shown what they bring to the table.
Ishan Kishan carried his fine T20 World Cup form into the IPL 2026 opening game. He scored 80 off 38 at a strike rate of 210.52. His innings included 8 fours and 5 sixes.
SRH’s Aniket Verma scored a quick-fire 43 off 18 at number seven. His innings included 3 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 238.88.
Devdutt Padikkal came in as an impact sub for RCB, scoring 61 off 26 at a strike rate of 234.61.
KKR’s Angkrish Raghuvanshi showed immense maturity in his knock of 51 off 29, striking at 175.86.
The opening games of IPL 2026 showed that experience still matters. The veterans delivered when it mattered and set the tone for the season. Meanwhile, the young guns proved that there will be names who will shine and come up the ranks, as we’ve seen in the past seasons.
