Will Shreyas Iyer Captain India in T20Is? Full Breakdown
Shreyas Iyer has quietly built a strong case to become India’s next captain, especially in the T20I format.
His leadership journey began in difficult circumstances during the 2018 IPL season. Midway through the tournament, Gautam Gambhir stepped down as Delhi Daredevils captain due to poor form and results. In an awkward press conference alongside Ricky Ponting, Iyer was named his successor.
That moment marked the start of his growth as both a batter and a leader.
From DC to IPL Glory with KKR
Under Ponting at Delhi Capitals, Shreyas Iyer developed into a composed captain and led then to an IPL final. He later moved to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022 after Delhi handed leadership to Rishabh Pant.
In 2024, Iyer reunited with Gambhir at KKR and led the team to the IPL title. That success triggered major changes. Gambhir soon became India’s head coach, while Iyer moved on from the franchise.
Despite his success, Iyer remained out of India’s T20I plans during this transition phase.
Shreyas Iyer leading Punjab Kings revival
Now at Punjab Kings, Iyer has once again impressed as a captain.
PBKS have started IPL 2026 strongly. They are unbeaten in five matches so far. In a key clash on April 19, Iyer’s side beat Pant-led Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs.
Punjab Kings posted 250+ runs batting first and defended the total comfortably.
Within the team, Iyer has been nicknamed “sarpanch”, meaning leader. His calm approach and authority have stood out.
Captaincy Strength & Batting Impact
Shreyas Iyer’s biggest strength is his control at No. 4 in T20 cricket.
At present, his role in the middle order remains one of the most stable among Indian batters. His ability to anchor and accelerate makes him a key option.

PBKS bowling coach James Hopes highlighted his growth.
“He’s very aware of what his perceived weaknesses were over the years. He’s come into this season having really nailed them. When he got hurt in Australia (in Oct last year), he was starting to nailing them in international cricket as well,” Hopes said.
“Once he finds his way back into the Indian team, you’ll see the batter he’s going to be for the rest of his career. Captaincy improves his batting,” Hopes added.
Hopes also stressed that Iyer no longer needs guidance as a captain.
“He was very young when he was captaining Delhi. He’s very well planned, but still follows his gut,” he said.
“Ricky and Shreyas work well together. When we get into our meetings, he’s the captain. He steps up and he’s got his own ideas, he’s willing to listen,” he concluded.
Competition for India captaincy
The captaincy debate has intensified after the dip in form of Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to the T20 World Cup title.
Iyer is now seen as a strong replacement option if selectors decide to move forward.
However, there are challenges.
Iyer has not played a T20I since 2023. That gap makes an immediate return as captain unlikely.
“lyer last played a T20l in 2023. He has not been part of the current setup. It’s a big call to bring him back and hand him the captaincy straightaway,” a media source revealed.
“The focus has shifted towards the 2027 ODI World Cup, which has given selectors breathing space to plan for a T20I leadership transition.”
Earlier, the leadership race also involved Rishabh Pant. But that comparison is now less relevant.
Pant, currently leading Lucknow Super Giants, is still trying to regain his place in the Indian setup after missing out following the 2024 T20 World Cup win.
Iyer, meanwhile, has moved ahead with consistent performances and strong leadership results.
What works for Shreyas Iyer?
- Proven IPL captain with a title win (KKR 2024)
- Strong start with PBKS in IPL 2026 (5 wins in 5 matches)
- Stable No. 4 batter in T20 cricket
- Already India’s ODI vice-captain
- Strong backing from coaching staff like Ponting and Hopes
India’s Captaincy Chances for Shreyas Iyer
- Iyer is the leading candidate if India transition away from Suryakumar Yadav in T20Is.
- His IPL leadership success and current PBKS form strengthen his case.
- His role as ODI vice-captain shows selectors already trust his leadership.
- A strong IPL 2026 season could fast-track his return to the T20I setup.
- If India plan long-term for the next T20 World Cup cycle, Iyer fits the profile of a stable leader.
Shreyas Iyer’s journey has not been smooth. But his performances and leadership record speak clearly.
From taking over mid-season in 2018 to winning the IPL in 2024 and now leading PBKS strongly in 2026, he has shown consistency. Iyer’s PBKS are already favourites to make it to the playoffs and even go one step ahead this time in the title race.
The biggest question now is timing.
If selectors look for a new T20I captain soon, Shreyas Iyer is firmly in the conversation.
