Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma dominating IPL Powerplay batting

Highest Powerplay Scores in IPL History You Should Know

The Powerplay phase in T20 cricket has changed completely over the years. Batters now attack from ball one. Teams look to maximise the first six overs instead of settling in. Powerplay batting has reached another level in recent years.

In IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) showed this trend again. Their openers smashed 105/0 in the Powerplay against Punjab Kings on April 11 in New Chandigarh. It was their third instance of scoring 100+ in the Powerplay. Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head’s partnership has been a major talking point when opening batting in modern day cricket is talked about.

Overall, this was the fifth time in IPL history that a team crossed 100 runs in the first six overs. SRH have dominated this list with multiple entries.

Here are Top 5 Powerplay Scores in IPL History

125/0 – SRH vs DC, 2024 (Highest Powerplay Score)

This remains the highest Powerplay score in IPL history.

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, famously called “Travishek”, dominated Delhi Capitals after they chose to bowl. SRH raced to 125/0 in 6 overs, with every over going for at least 19 runs.

Delhi tried five different bowlers, but nothing worked.

  • Head: 84* off 26 balls
  • Abhishek: 40 off 10 balls (SR 400)
  • Boundaries: 13 fours and 11 sixes

It was one of the most destructive top order displays ever seen.

107/0 – SRH vs LSG, 2024

SRH struck again in the same season with another massive Powerplay effort.

Chasing 166, they reached 107/0 in 6 overs and finished the chase inside 10 overs.

Abhishek Sharma set the tone by hitting 4, 4, 4, 4 off Yash Thakur in one over. Travis Head followed with a brutal assault.

  • K Gowtham conceded 22 runs in an over
  • Naveen-ul-Haq went for 4, 4, 6, 4, 4 in the fifth over
  • The last 3 overs of the Powerplay produced 60 runs

105/0 – KKR vs RCB, 2017

This was one of the earliest examples of Powerplay destruction in the IPL.

Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn powered KKR to 105/0 in 6 overs while chasing 159.

After a steady start of 20/0 in two overs, the pair exploded.

  • Narine smashed 6, 6, 6, 4 off Samuel Badree (25 runs)
  • He later hit four fours and a six off Sreenath Aravind
  • Narine reached a 50 off 15 balls (joint-fastest at the time)
  • Lynn ended the Powerplay with a 20-run over off Yuzvendra Chahal

105/0 – SRH vs PBKS, 2026

SRH returned to the list again in IPL 2026 with another dominant Powerplay performance.

They reached 105/0 in New Chandigarh, although only 20 runs came in the first two overs.

Abhishek Sharma started the charge:

  • Took 24 runs off Arshdeep Singh
  • Hit 2 fours and 2 sixes in that over

Travis Head joined in:

  • Took Marco Jansen for 2 fours and a six
  • Abhishek smashed 6, 0, 6, 6, 0, 6 off Vijaykumar Vyshak
  • Head hit 4, 4, 4 off Xavier Bartlett in the final over

This was SRH’s third 100+ total in the first 6 overs, showing their dominance in this phase.

100/2 – CSK vs KXIP (now PBKS), 2014

This remains one of CSK’s most iconic Powerplay innings in IPL knockouts.

Chasing 227 in Qualifier 2, CSK were 9/1 after one over. Then Suresh Raina took over.

  • Scored 18 runs off Sandeep Sharma in the second over
  • Hit multiple boundaries off Parwinder Awana
  • Took 20 runs off Mitchell Johnson
  • Hammered Awana for 33 runs in one over

CSK reached 100/2 in 6 overs, but still lost the match.

Final Take on Powerplay in IPL

The powerplay has become the most aggressive phase in the IPL. Teams now aim to score big early and take control of matches.

SRH’s opening duo of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have redefined Powerplay batting with multiple entries on this list. Their approach shows how teams are evolving in T20 cricket.

Watch out for the likes of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in the coming years to dominate this phase of the game.
